2018 Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe: Is it the Best Variant of the GLE-Class?
Mercedes-Benz has simplified the designation of the models of its vehicles for the customers to distinguish easily. The SUV range of the Mercedes-Benz is now all categorized under the GL-Class. A letter extension at the end defines the model on which the SUV is based on.
The ‘E’ in the GLE-Class is a clear indication that the SUV is based on the E-Class sedan. However, the GLE-Class has a further variant which is called the GLE Coupe.
The GLE Coupe is exactly the same car underneath as the GLE-Class. The major difference between the two vehicles is clearly the design. The GLE Coupe has been given the typical sporty treatment with a sloping backend.
The interior is of the GLE Coupe is also only slightly different than the regular GLE-Class. The dashboard features the typical analog dials for speedometer and tachometer. The center console is crowded with buttons with a big screen in the top for navigation and other vehicular controls.
You will also find powered seat adjustment, mood lighting and many other luxury options in the interior. One downside of the GLE Coupe is the cramped up backseats due to the coupe design.
From the outside the car is clearly distinguishable from the standard GLE-Class model. The GLE Coupe is much more curvy and sporty. This SUV looks the best with the AMG appearance package which gives it sporty wheels and aggressive overall looks.
Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe comes with two different models, the GLE43 and the GLE63 S.
The engine that you get in the GLE43 is the 3.0L bi-turbo V6 which churns out 385 HP and 384 lb-ft of torques with a 0-60 mph time of just 5.6 second. It also features all-wheel drive along with a 9-speed automatic transmission.
Things get serious when you at the performance numbers of the GLE63 S MAG. This model features a monstrous 5.5L V8 engine that produces a whopping 577 HP and 561 lb-ft of torque. This massive engine accelerates this heavy car from 0-60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. The GLE63 S also features an all-wheel drive system and a 7-speed automatic transmission.
The fuel economy rate of the GLE43 is 17 mpg in city and 22 mpg on highways. The GLE63 S offers a fuel economy of 14 mpg in city and 18 mpg on highways. These fuel economy numbers aren’t very impressive but then again, these cars weren’t designed to be fuel efficient in the first place.
The Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe is an amazing vehicle for someone who is looking for a midsize sport vehicle. This vehicle competes directly with likes of BMW X6, Audi Q7 and Jaguar F-Pace. So the answer to the question, is AMG GLE Coupe the best GLE-Class variant? Well, if you want performance then yes it is the best but if you are looking for practicality then you should definitely go for the standard GLE-Class SUV.
