2019 Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4MATIC+, A New Direction for the 4-Door Coupe

November 14th, 2018 by

The CLS-Class wasn’t necessary at the time of its launch back in 2004. However, it worked out pretty great for Mercedes-Benz brand. The reason for its success is the trend-setting style of the car’s body. The car was labeled ‘4-door coupe’ by Mercedes-Benz, which made CLS-Class the trendsetter in this category. Many rival car companies introduced their 4-door coupes to challenge Mercedes-Benz.

Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz introduced the third generation of the CLS-Class. There have been some significant changes in the new model, especially in the engine section. For the first time in its history, the CLS-Class will feature an inline 6 cylinder engine. The same engine will also be featured in the AMG variant of the car.

Goodbye CLS63, Hello CLS53 4MATIC+

Mercedes-AMG shocked the world after announcing that it will discontinue the CLS 63 model for the next generation. Instead, they introduced the brand new CLS 53 model, which is the only AMG variant of the CLS-Class. This also means no more V8 for the CLS-Class.

New Engine

The CLS 53 4MATIC+ features a 3.0L inline-6 turbocharged engine, which is paired with an electric EQ boost technology. The combined power output is 429 HP and 384 lb-ft of torque. This is a huge drop in the power figures as compared to the current year’s CLS 63 S. However, Mercedes-AMG has decided to keep the CLS underpowered and more eco-friendly. So, if you want to buy a midsize Mercedes-AMG luxury sedan with a screaming V8, then your only choice is the E63.

Despite being heavily underpowered compared to its predecessor, the new CLS 53 can hit 60 mph from a standstill in just 4.4 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, which is decent for a midsize luxury 4-door coupe. Although these numbers are a mere shadow of the previous model, this is clearly the direction Mercedes-Benz wants to go with the CLS now.

There will also be no rear-wheel drive option in the CLS 53. It will only be available in the four-wheel drive format known as 4MATIC+. The 4MATIC+ is an intelligent and more advanced four-wheel drive system than the normal 4MATIC.

New Design

The new CLS 53 reveals the next style definition of Mercedes-Benz. The same styling has already been released through the A-Class and the new GLE-Class. The main focus of this straight and sleek body style is aerodynamics. Mercedes-Benz claims that this design will make all their cars significantly more aerodynamically efficient.

Premium Interior

New generation means the interior is also completely redesigned. The CLS 53 features the sporty steering wheel and aggressive color linings throughout the cabin. The new side-by-side screens follow the design language of the S-Class. Everything inside the interior is constructed with high-quality material and with exquisite attention to detail.
