2019 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class First Look
The demand for SUVs has never been higher than it is today. This is the main reason why many car companies have shifted their major focus on SUV production. Mercedes-Benz, on the other hand, is quite calm over this hype of Sports Utility Vehicles. However, when it comes to competition, Mercedes-Benz certainly has contenders to offer.
The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is the smallest crossover SUV that the German automakers produce. This little SUV is based on the A-Class hatchback. In fact, both of the vehicles look so familiar that it might be hard to tell the difference between them from a distance.
For the 2019 model, Mercedes-Benz has decided to stick to the current first generation model of the GLA-Class. This is a surprising fact because just recently the new completely redesigned model of the A-Class was revealed by Mercedes-Benz. As the GLA-Class is based on the A-Class, people expected it to follow the design. However, we might have to wait for at least another year before we get a new redesign on the GLA-Class as well.
Overall, the exterior of the car looks like a beefed up version of the outgoing A-Class hatchback. The front bumper and grill looks a bit refreshed, but those are just minor tweaks. The interior also remains unchanged as it is also a carbon copy of the outgoing A-Class. However, it is still pretty nice as you get the same MBUX system and the plush leather interior.
When it comes to performance, the GLA-Class doesn’t disappoint at all. It features the same 2.0 L turbo-charged inline-4 engine as the current year’s model. This engine is capable of producing 208 Hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. These are some impressive numbers from a relatively tiny SUV. The 0-60 mph is around 7.1 seconds, which isn’t bad either considering you won’t be taking to a drag strip.
The transmission in the GLA-Class is the same old 7G-DCT, which works perfectly to distribute the power between the gears.
Comfort & Convenience
Like every typical Mercedes-Benz vehicle, the GLA-Class delivers top quality comfort for the driver and the passengers. There is a big screen on the center console that allows you to control the infotainment system of the car. You also get the option of Apple CarPlay if you want to connect to your phone.
The parking assist feature is brilliant as it helps you conquer the most difficult parallel parking situations. The dynamic select option allows selecting different modes of driving such as comfort, sport mode, and ECO mode.
Like every other Mercedes-Benz vehicle, the GLA-Class is also available in the AMG trim level. It features the same 2.0 L turbo-charged inline-4 engine, but it has tuned up to produce a whopping 375 HP. This boost of power is enough to propel the car from 0 mph to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. This is sports car acceleration is now possible in a small sub-compact SUV.
