5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Mercedes-Benz S-Class

November 28th, 2018 by

The S-Class is the undisputed king of all the vehicles produced by Mercedes-Benz. Being the flagship model of the brand, it defines what the brand is currently capable of achieving at the current moment in terms of technology and overall automotive performance. It has been around for several decades now and has become a benchmark for many automakers in the world.

Here are some of the most interesting things about Mercedes-Benz S-Class that you probably didn’t know:

1.     The First ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)

Mercedes-Benz S-Class was the first car to receive the ABS. Mercedes-Benz developed a perfectly functioning anti-lock braking system (ABS) back in 1978 as a joint project with Bosch. The ABS was offered as an optional extra in the 1978 model (W116) of the S-Class. The S-Class officially became the first car in history to bear this revolutionary system that is so common and cheap nowadays.

2.     Leader of the Luxury Diesel Cars

It is true that diesel engines aren’t that exciting when compared to their gasoline counterpart, which is why luxury manufacturers avoided choosing them for their cars. Mercedes-Benz S-Class broke this stereotype and introduced a diesel engine in the W116 S-Class model of 1978. The 3.0 L turbocharged inline-5 diesel engine was a perfect match for the car. This car led the revolution, where many luxury manufacturers started offering diesel variants of their cars.

3.     Advanced Air Conditioner

When it comes to using advanced technology, Mercedes-Benz S-Class has always been at the forefront. Air conditioning systems became fairly common in cars during the 1990s. However, the dual zone climate control was still an unprecedented territory. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class became the first car in history to feature independent climate control for the driver and the passengers.

4.     Unprecedented Potential

Other than making highly reliable and top-of-the-line luxury vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is also famous for producing ridiculously large engines. The W140 model of the S-Class featured a 6.0 L V12 engine. This engine was the first ever mass produced 12 cylinders engine in the world. It was tuned to produce 408 HP in the S-Class, which made it the most powerful production car at the time.

5.     Unofficial Protection

Armored cars are pretty common nowadays as politicians and billionaire businessmen around the world own tons of them. However, they were not so common back in the 1960s. Mercedes-Benz decided to modify their W108 model of the 280 SEL, which is a car that the S-Class traces its roots to. The armored version of the 280 SEL was bought extensively in Germany and all over the world to protect VIP personnel.
