Mercedes-Benz to Test Self-Driving Cars on the Streets of Silicon Valley in 2019
Mercedes-Benz is an automotive company that is known to be the leader in every innovative car technology. The new trend that is taking over the automotive world right now is self-driving cars. Mercedes-Benz has been working on the project of self-driving cars for a long time now and they have been very successful with that. They have introduced systems like autonomous parking and intelligent adaptive cruise control systems which allow the car to drive itself on open roads.
Now, Mercedes-Benz is looking to step up their game and take out their self-driving cars out on the city roads with real traffic. The region they have chosen to test their autonomous machines is none other than Silicon Valley. The area surrounding Silicon Valley is considered to be the tech hub of the United States. It is the home of some of the biggest technology companies in the world, which might be the reason that Mercedes-Benz decided to flex their muscles in that neighborhood.
Bosch, which is a supplier of automotive parts for Daimler AG vehicles in the United States, has decided to lead the project of self-driving Mercedes-Benz vehicles in San Francisco Bay area region. The project comprises of offering free taxi rides to general public so they can experience the self-driving Mercedes-Benz vehicles first hand. Of course the cars will have emergency human drivers on board as well for safety purposes. The cars will pick up passengers and take them on the preselected routes for free.
Mercedes-Benz is partnering up with NVIDIA, an American technology company, to accomplish this free driving project. The cars involved in the project are expected to be equipped with a custom version of autonomous vehicle technology by NVIDIA.
Mercedes-Benz already has a great reputation of working on self-driving vehicles in the past. Projects like the futuristic Smart Vision EQ which looks like a concept pulled directly out of a science fiction movie. But this would be the first time that the company is trying its autonomous vehicles as taxis.
Mercedes-Benz has high hopes for the success of this trial after partnering with NVIDIA. NVIDIA is one of the leading innovators when it comes to autonomous driving systems. The ‘Drive Pegasus’ is an autonomous technology by NVIDIA and has been successfully tested by some of the biggest automotive companies in the world.
The experiment is expected to begin somewhere around the time of second half of 2019. So far there are no details available regarding locations and the size of the project. Mercedes-Benz has also yet to decide whether they will use their flagship S-Class cars for this trial or just the V-Class vans. The details will be released after both Mercedes-Benz and NVIDIA finish their contract negotiations.
