Mercedes-Benz Vans Expanding
Mercedes-Benz VansExpanding to North Charleston
Mercedes-Benz Vans recently made a major announcement. The German manufacturer has opened a Sprinter plant in North Charleston. The production facility is equipped with a full body shop, paint shop and final assembly building. The new development opens just in time for the U.S. market launch of the new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Mercedes-Benz also disclosed a new partnership with Amazon, which includes the delivery of 20,000 vans for small businesses across the U.S. – this makes Amazon the largest Sprinter customer for Mercedes-Benz.
Mercedes-Benz Makes an Investment
The German manufacturer is said to have invested 500 million U.S. dollars to put this new plant on the map. Although this might be a tough amount to swallow, the money was very well spent; featuring state-of-the-art intelligent production – with driverless transport systems, paperless documentation and exceptional digital training tools, this facility is unlike any other. Mercedes-Benz employed 900 employees at the start of production and is expecting to grow up to 1,300 total employees by the end of 2020.
Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, said: “The USA is already the second largest market for our Sprinter today. With the new, state-of-the-art production site in South Carolina, we will be able to supply our customers in North America even faster and with more flexibility in the future. This makes better use of the dynamic market potential, placing our new plant in North Charleston as a central component of our growth strategy ‘Mercedes-Benz Vans goes global.”
