Top 4 Mercedes-Benz Sports Cars of All Time
Mercedes-Benz might be famous for producing comfortable luxury sedans but there is more to this brand than meets the eye. Automotive enthusiasts know that Mercedes-Benz conquers every category of automobiles. They produce high-end SUVs, sports cars and even racing cars. This struggle of the German manufacturers has resulted in some of the most iconic cars the world has ever seen.
Speaking of sports cars, here are 4 of the best sports cars produced by Mercedes-Benz:
(4) Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was launched back in 2010 as the spiritual successor of the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300SL ‘Gullwing’. To pay tribute to the iconic car the SLS AMG featured the same Gullwing doors.
As the top-end sports car of the brand, SLS AMG was the replacement for the Mercedes-McLaren SLR. It was also the first Mercedes-Benz vehicle to be designed in-house by AMG.
The SLS stands for “Super Leicht Sport” (Super light Sport). The standard SLS AMG featured a massive 6.2 L V8 which produced a whopping 563HP. AMG claimed that it was the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine ever made (at the time).
(3) Mercedes-AMG GT
Mercedes-AMG GT is the current top of the line sports car produced by Mercedes-Benz and AMG. The GT was launched in 2014 and went onto sale the next year. It was introduced as the replacement for the outgoing SLS AMG.
The standard Mercedes-AMG GT is a two-door, two-seater sports car that features a smaller 4.0 L bi-turbo V8 engine which produces 456 HP. Other more powerful variants of the GT were also launched afterwards and are still in production. The most powerful one among them is the GT-R which features the same engine which is tuned up to produce 577 HP and 516 lb-ft. The 0-60 mph time for the GT-R is just 3.6 seconds.
Even though Mercedes-McLaren SLR was a ‘hyper car’ it still makes the list at number 2 because it represented the brand as its top-end performance vehicle. The SLR was developed as joint project of Mercedes-Benz and McLaren automotive.
The SLR was powered by a 5.4L supercharged V8 which produced 617 HP and 575 lb-ft of torque. This monster engine would propel the car from 0-60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds and would keep on going to the top speed of 220 mph. It was one of the fastest cars in the world at the time of its launch.
(1)Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR
Perhaps the most iconic sports car in the company’s history was actually designed as a race car initially. The Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR road car was launched back in 1998 and only 35 were produced which makes it ultra rare. It featured a monstrous 6.9 L V12 engine that produced 604 HP which was scary at the time. It accelerated from 0-60 mph in just under 3.8 seconds and the top speed was limited to 214 mph.
The CLK GTR also held the Guinness World Record for the most expensive production car ever made (at the time) as it had an eye watering price of $1,547,620.
