The most obvious difference between the GLE 450 and the GLE 450e PHEV lies in how they move.
The GLE 450 4MATIC features a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system known as EQ Boost. It delivers 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, which allows for smooth and confident acceleration. The EQ Boost system can briefly add up to 21 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, helping to reduce turbo lag and improving efficiency without affecting performance. The 9-speed automatic transmission and standard 4MATIC all-wheel drive system deliver confident traction and control in any condition.
The GLE 450e 4MATIC, on the other hand, combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 134-hp electric motor, producing a combined 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The extra torque from the electric motor is immediately available, giving the PHEV version a surprisingly quick response from a standstill. Unlike the mild hybrid, the GLE PHEV also features a 31.2 kWh battery (with usable capacity around 23 kWh), enabling an estimated electric-only range of around 85 km based on Canadian NRCan standards.
If you’re looking for performance without plugging in, the GLE 450 offers strong output with conventional convenience. If your goal is to minimize fuel use during daily commuting and take advantage of electric driving, the GLE PHEV may be the more efficient choice.
Both models are built on the same platform and offer very similar ride comfort and handling dynamics. They can be equipped with AIRMATIC air suspension, which adjusts damping in real time and smooths out rough pavement while improving highway stability. The GLE 450 has slightly better weight distribution and a lighter overall curb weight compared to the PHEV, which translates to a slightly more dynamic and balanced feel in corners.
However, the GLE PHEV operates in near silence when driving on electricity, creating a serene experience that’s especially appreciated in stop-and-go urban settings. The transition between electric and gas power is also smooth and well-integrated. Drivers can choose between several drive modes to tailor the power delivery, including fully electric (EV), hybrid, battery hold, and sport modes.
For drivers who prioritize quietness and the option to run emissions-free for local trips, the GLE 450e has a unique appeal. For those who value performance agility and responsiveness at highway speeds, the GLE 450 offers a slightly sharper edge.
The GLE 450e supports Level 2 charging and includes a standard 11 kW onboard charger, allowing a full charge in approximately 2.5–3 hours with a Level 2 home charger. This makes it easy for owners to top up overnight or between errands. While there is no DC fast charging capability, most GLE PHEV buyers will rely on home charging.
It’s important to note that the GLE 450 doesn’t require any charging at all—it uses its EQ Boost mild hybrid system seamlessly and regenerates power automatically during braking and coasting. There’s no change in daily habits or need to install charging equipment.
If you have access to home charging and plan to use the vehicle mostly for short to medium daily drives, the GLE PHEV’s electric range could cover most of your needs. If you want the convenience of a traditional engine without ever thinking about plugging in, the GLE 450 is the more straightforward option.
Inside, both models are nearly identical in layout, luxury, and technology. Each comes with dual 12.3-inch digital displays running the latest MBUX infotainment system, including voice control, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and over-the-air update capability. The 2025 GLE models also support augmented reality navigation and feature an optional Burmester 3D Surround Sound System for a high-end audio experience.
