Mercedes-Benz Winter Tire Guide and Weather Maintenance Tips

Cold mornings, slush and salty roads ask a lot of any vehicle. Your Mercedes-Benz uses systems like ABS and ESP to help you stay in control, and every one of them depends on the grip between your tires and the road. The right tires, set to the right pressure, give those systems the traction they need.

This guide covers choosing winter tires, reading the MO markings on the sidewall, checking tire pressure in the cold and preparing the rest of your vehicle for the season. Electric Mercedes-Benz owners will also find tips for protecting range when temperatures drop.

Why 7°C Is the Number to Watch

Mercedes-Benz recommends switching to the right seasonal tires once temperatures stay consistently above or below 7°C.

Transport Canada explains that summer and all-season tires start to lose their elasticity below 7°C, which reduces traction. Winter tires use softer compounds that stay flexible at much lower temperatures. The Tire and Rubber Association of Canada reports that, just below freezing, vehicles on winter tires can stop up to 30% shorter than vehicles on all-season tires.

Summer tires need extra care. Some Mercedes-AMG models wear summer high-performance tires that are not designed for snow and ice, and the GLC owner’s manual warns that summer tires driven in low temperatures can tear and suffer permanent damage.

What the MO Markings on Mercedes-Benz Tires Mean

To earn an MO marking, a tire must meet more than 40 Mercedes-Benz specifications covering its rubber mixture, construction and tread. Here is what each marking tells you:

  • MO (Mercedes Original): developed, tested and adapted to individual Mercedes-Benz models
  • MOE (Mercedes Original Extended): reinforced sidewalls with run-flat properties after a loss of pressure
  • MO1: Mercedes Original tires made for AMG models, matched to the suspension
  • MOS (Mercedes Original Silent): a foam insert that reduces tire noise on selected vehicles

An MO marking confirms the tire is approved for your vehicle. To confirm a winter tire, look for the peaked mountain and snowflake symbol, which identifies tires that meet a specific snow-traction standard. MO winter tires that carry this symbol check both boxes.

Fitting Winter Tires the Right Way

Install winter tires on all four wheels, as Transport Canada recommends. The GLC owner’s manual, for example, calls for tires of the same type and make, with winter tires sharing the same tread pattern.

Match the approved size, load rating and speed rating for your model, and use the same wheel size on both sides of each axle. Vehicles with the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package need tires approved for the vehicle’s maximum speed. If your vehicle has tire pressure monitoring, each winter wheel needs a working sensor, and the system should be restarted after the change.

If your Mercedes-Benz came with MOExtended run-flat tires and your winter tires lack run-flat properties, add a TIREFIT kit, since these vehicles are not supplied with one from the factory.

Transport Canada also advises against using tires worn close to 4 mm on snow-covered roads, and the GLC owner’s manual calls for replacing tires after six years at the latest, regardless of wear.

Check Tire Pressure When It Is Cold

Tire pressure drops by about 7 kPa, or 1 psi, for every 5°C drop in temperature.

Check pressures at least once a month with a good-quality gauge, and before long trips. Mercedes-Benz owner’s manuals, such as the GLE’s, ask you to adjust pressure only when the tires are cold: parked out of direct sunlight for at least three hours and driven less than 1.6 km.

Use the pressure listed for your vehicle. On models such as the GLE, you will find it on the Tire and Loading Information placard on the door pillar and in the table inside the fuel filler flap. The maximum pressure moulded into the sidewall is a different number. Tire pressure monitoring is a helpful warning, but it does not replace a monthly check with a gauge.

Your Winter Maintenance Checklist

A few quick checks help the rest of your Mercedes-Benz handle the cold:

  • Coolant and washer fluid: check coolant concentration before winter, use a winter washer fluid and avoid mixing incompatible washer products
  • Wipers and lights: inspect wiper blades for wear and confirm every exterior light works
  • 12-volt battery: a discharged battery can freeze near 0°C, so never charge or jump-start a frozen battery; let it thaw and have it checked
  • Road salt: remove salt deposits promptly with a mild car shampoo, a gentle rinse and a thorough dry

How 4MATIC and Winter Tires Work Together

4MATIC all-wheel drive reads the traction at each wheel and sends power where it can be used, which adds confidence on snowy and wet roads. Mercedes-Benz is clear that performance is still limited by the traction available, and that the best snow performance comes with winter tires.

Winter Tips for Electric Mercedes-Benz Models

Temperature, climate settings and driving style all influence EV range. Natural Resources Canada reports that EV range drops by an average of 29% at minus 18°C.

Use pre-entry climate control in the Mercedes-Benz app to warm the cabin before you leave, and set daily departure times so it is ready on schedule. Natural Resources Canada notes that warming an EV while it is plugged in can extend range by 10 to 15%.

On equipped models, setting a charging station as your navigation destination lets the vehicle optimize battery temperature before you arrive, since a cold battery can reduce maximum charging power. Parking in a garage also helps protect range and charging time.

Before Every Winter Drive

Clear snow from the entire vehicle, including the roof, hood, windows and lights. For gas-powered models, Natural Resources Canada says that in most cases no more than 60 seconds of idling is needed after a cold start, followed by gentle driving.

Keep an emergency kit on board, as Transport Canada recommends:

  • A small long-handled shovel, sand or kitty litter and traction mats
  • An ice scraper, snow brush, flashlight and warning triangles
  • Blankets, gloves, a tuque, extra socks, water and non-perishable snacks
  • Booster cables, a first-aid kit, extra washer fluid and a phone charging cable

4MATIC in Fall Rain: Why All-Wheel Drive Matters on Ontario’s Wet Autumn Roads

The first cold rain of the season rarely announces itself. One morning the pavement is dry, and by the afternoon commute it’s slick with a mix of rain, road oil, and a fresh layer of fallen leaves. For Ontario drivers, that combination shows up every autumn, and it changes how a vehicle grips the road. This is exactly the kind of moment 4MATIC all-wheel drive is built to handle.
