Why The 2027 Mercedes-Benz CLA Won Car Of The Year 2026: 602 km Of Range And 320 kW Charging

The European Car of the Year jury handed the all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA its 2026 title at a ceremony during the Brussels Motor Show in January 2026. Fifty-nine automotive journalists from 23 countries cast votes. The CLA faced 34 other new models, made the final six, and finished with 320 points, a full 100 points clear of the second-place car.

Awards are easy to hand out and harder to explain. In this case, two numbers do most of the explaining: up to 602 kilometres of estimated range in the 2027 CLA 250+ Electric, and a maximum DC charging speed of 320 kW. Below is a look at the engineering behind the title, plus how the two Canadian CLA models compare on paper.

What The Car Of The Year Jury Was Measuring

The Car of the Year panel is made up of working automotive journalists who drive every eligible new model launched across Europe. That makes the result a read on engineering rather than marketing spend.

  • 59 jurors from 23 countries cast ballots
  • 34 new models entered, narrowed to six finalists
  • Final tally of 320 points, 100 points ahead of the runner-up
  • Awarded in January 2026 at the Brussels Motor Show

Where The 602 km Range Figure Comes From

Both CLA models carry the same 85 kWh usable lithium-ion battery, so the 602 km estimate of the CLA 250+ Electric comes from how little energy the car uses rather than from how much it stores. The rear-mounted permanently excited synchronous motor was developed in-house and traces back to the VISION EQXX research car, with battery-to-wheel efficiency of 93 percent over long distances.

A two-speed transmission on the rear axle does a lot of the work. First gear runs a short 11:1 ratio for acceleration from a standstill and efficiency in city driving, while second gear at 5:1 handles highway speeds. The body helps too, with a drag coefficient starting at 0.21. Cold weather is handled by a multi-source air-to-air heat pump, a first for a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, which pulls waste heat from the drivetrain, the battery and the ambient air. It needs roughly one third of the energy a comparable auxiliary heater would use for the same output.

320 kW Charging And The 800-Volt Architecture

The CLA runs an 800-volt electrical architecture, which is what allows the 320 kW peak DC charging figure. Under optimal conditions, that adds roughly 300 to 350 kilometres of range in 15 to 20 minutes. A 10 to 80 percent charge takes about 22 minutes at a suitable fast charger. AC charging is rated at 9.6 kW for overnight top-ups at home or at Level 2 public stations.

Access matters as much as speed. Through MB.CHARGE Public, CLA drivers can charge at multiple North American providers including ChargePoint, FLO and Tesla Superchargers. The car is also prepared for bidirectional charging, covering both vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-home use.

The Cabin: MB.OS And The Return Of The Frunk

The CLA is the first Mercedes-Benz built on MB.OS, the brand’s own operating system, running the fourth generation of MBUX. Navigation is based on a tailored Google Maps solution, and MBUX Navigation with Electric Intelligence plans routes around charging stops automatically. An available MBUX SUPERSCREEN adds a 14-inch passenger display across the dash.

Practicality improved as well. The CLA measures 4,722 mm long on a 2,789 mm wheelbase, with 405 litres of trunk space plus a 71-litre front trunk. That frunk is the first on a modern Mercedes-Benz, returning after roughly 90 years.

Trim Packages And Pricing

Canadian buyers choose from three equipment levels on either powertrain:

  • Premium (included): MB.OS with fourth-generation MBUX, panoramic fixed sunroof, MAGIC VISION CONTROL, power front seats with memory, MBUX Navigation, LED headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and a heated steering wheel
  • Exclusive ($3,100): Adds Digital Vehicle Key, ambient lighting, dual wireless phone charging, KEYLESS-GO, THERMOTRONIC dual-zone automatic climate control and MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST
  • Pinnacle ($4,900): Adds head-up display, Active MULTIBEAM LED headlights, MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST 360, MBUX SUPERSCREEN with the 14-inch passenger display, a power-closing trunk with HANDS-FREE ACCESS and illuminated door sills

Certain Premium trim configurations of the CLA 250+ Electric (RWD) qualify for the federal EVAP incentive of $5,000, subject to Transport Canada program requirements and final vehicle configuration. Stackable provincial incentives may also apply depending on program rules and configuration.

Which CLA Is Right For You?

The CLA 250+ Electric is the distance model. With up to 602 km of estimated range, rear-wheel drive and 268 hp, it suits drivers who log highway kilometres and want the longest gap between charging stops. It is also the model tied to federal incentive eligibility on qualifying configurations.

The CLA 350 4MATIC Electric trades about 100 km of estimated range for 349 hp, 380 lb-ft of torque and all-wheel drive. It reaches 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, nearly two seconds quicker than the 250+. Drivers who want four-season traction and stronger acceleration will find the trade worthwhile, and the 320 kW charging ceiling is identical on both.
