The GLE 350 pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-4 with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The gas engine makes 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque on its own, and its Integrated Starter-Generator can add up to 20 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque on demand, while also allowing fuel-free coasting and recapturing energy on deceleration.
The GLE 450 4MATIC Coupe uses the same mild hybrid architecture around a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-6, and the numbers move up: 375 hp, 413 lb-ft of torque, plus an Integrated Starter-Generator that contributes 23 hp and 151 lb-ft of its own. That gap shows up at the stoplight. The 350 needs 7.1 seconds to reach 60 mph; the 450 Coupe does it in 5.2 seconds, a 1.9-second difference that matters most when merging onto a busy highway or passing a slower vehicle.
An inline-6 also runs inherently smoother than a four-cylinder, with power that feels like a continuous pull rather than a single push. Both route power through a 9-speed automatic to 4MATIC all-wheel drive, so traction is not the difference here, only the amount of power on tap.
The 350’s SUV roofline gives it a real space advantage that shows up in the back seat. Front headroom measures 1,074 mm and rear headroom 1,027 mm, both more generous than the 450 Coupe’s 1,022 mm up front and 960 mm in the back. The coupe’s sloped roof cuts 67 mm out of rear headroom, more than the 52 mm it takes from the front.

Both models share the 9-speed automatic and 4MATIC all-wheel drive, so drivetrain sophistication is not the differentiator. The 450 Coupe pulls ahead on the tech surface itself: it comes standard with the MBUX Superscreen, three 12.3-inch digital displays set beneath a single glass surface across the dash, running a new-generation MBUX Virtual Assistant built to hold natural, multi-turn conversations.
The Coupe’s suspension is also tuned for its lower stance, running a 4-link front and 5-arm multilink rear setup with Agility Control selective damping, a more specific calibration than the SUV’s independent suspension with selective damping.
Both trims ride on 20-inch wheels with 275/50R20 all-season tires and take an 85 L tank of premium gasoline, so tire choices and fuel stops look identical either way.
If your household regularly needs a third row, or you want the tallest sightline and the most cargo room with the seats folded flat, the GLE 350 is the more practical answer. Its four-cylinder engine also sips less fuel in city driving, rated at 12.2 L/100 km against the 450 Coupe’s 12.5 L/100 km.
If you want the inline-6’s extra 120 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque, and the 1.9-second quicker sprint to 60 mph, the GLE 450 4MATIC Coupe rewards that priority with a lower stance, a standard MBUX Superscreen, and suspension tuning built around agility rather than maximum interior volume.
