Mercedes-Benz Brampton: 5 Signs You Need Brake Pads

Car maintenance can be a tricky proposition. Sometimes you know exactly when to take your vehicle in to be serviced, other times not so much. Brake pads for example, can be tricky to figure out if they need to be replaced or not. That’s why our Mercedes Benz Ontario staff put together this list to look out for when it comes to brake pads.

Squealing

The most obvious sign that you need new brake pads is when you hear a squealing noise when you are driving normally without any pressure on the brakes. It will go away when you press on the brakes, which is kind of ironic.

This is a result of “wear indicators” that purposely emit that unpleasant sound for you to hear. When the pad wears down, the indicator scrapes against the rotor, creating the squealing noise.

Clicking

For some cars, the brake pads are kept steady with clips, bolts or pins. When they become loose one way or another, they will begin to rattle, creating a clicking noise.

Brake Fade

Brake fade is the result of intentionally applying the brakes over a vast distance without bringing the vehicle to a complete stop. Doing this frequently will take a toll on your brakes over time. This causes the brake pads to make contact with the rotors for an extended period, heating them up. The heat reduces friction and you’ll then start to notice more prolonged stops.

Brake Turning

Brake pads don’t always wear out at the same rate; your vehicle can be prone to one side wearing out quicker than the other. This causes your vehicle to pull slightly in either direction when you apply the brakes. Ignoring this would cause extra stress to go to your steering rack, which is definitely not worth it.

Vibrations

If you are noticing the brake pedal violently shaking whenever you step on it, you need to get your pads checked out immediately. Brake pads are typically held together with binding resin and as the brake pads wear down, the adhesive gets hot and smears across the rotor. If it spreads unevenly, then you will get this vibrating result and you’ll need to have it fixed.
