Mercedes-Benz has officially announced the 2028 VLE — a fully electric grand limousine that the brand describes as the beginning of a new era. For many Canadian buyers, this is a vehicle they haven't encountered before. The name is new, the architecture is new, and the platform it's built on is unlike anything currently in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. If you've heard about it and want to know what it actually is and what to expect, this article covers the key questions.

The VLE was announced in March and is set to arrive for the 2028 model year. It's a battery electric vehicle built on an all-new platform — the Mercedes-Benz Van Architecture — designed specifically to support the model's unique combination of limousine-grade ride quality and MPV-like interior flexibility. Here's what you need to know.

What Does VLE Stand For, and What Kind of Vehicle Is It?

VLE is a new model name in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. The vehicle sits in a category of its own: it has the low, flowing roofline of a premium grand limousine and the interior versatility of a multi-purpose vehicle. It's fully electric, seats between six and eight passengers, and is designed for both long-distance private travel and premium passenger transport.

The body is shaped around a low aerodynamic profile with a drag coefficient of 0.25. Entry and exit are through two electric sliding doors — one on each side — each with a fully retractable window. There's also a separately opening rear window that provides access to cargo without opening the full tailgate.

What Are the Two Powertrain Options?

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed two variants at launch:

  • VLE 300 electric — single rear motor, 272 hp (203 kW), rear-wheel drive
  • VLE 400 4MATIC electric — dual motor, 409 hp (305 kW), all-wheel drive, 0–100 km/h in 6.5 seconds

Both variants use a new-generation NMC battery with a usable energy capacity of 115 kWh. The VLE 300 electric handles long-range travel with ease, while the VLE 400 4MATIC electric adds all-wheel traction for drivers who prioritize performance and all-weather capability.

Range for both models is confirmed at over 700 km (WLTP). Note that WLTP figures are measured under standardized European test conditions; real-world range in Canadian conditions — particularly in winter — will vary.

How Fast Does It Charge?

The VLE is built around an 800-volt electrical architecture, which is one of its headline technical features. At a compatible DC fast-charging station, it can recharge for up to 355 km of WLTP range in approximately 15 minutes. Maximum DC charging speed is over 300 kW. A DC converter also allows the VLE to charge at standard 400-volt fast-charging stations, keeping charging network compatibility broad.

How Many People Can It Carry?

The VLE seats between six and eight passengers, depending on configuration. Three full rows of seating are available. Rear seat flexibility is a central part of the vehicle's design: the manually operated Roll & Go seats have four integrated wheels and can be repositioned or removed without tools. The electrically adjustable seats can be reconfigured via the infotainment screen, the door-panel seat controls, or the Mercedes-Benz App, using a feature called Remote Variable Rear Space.

Four preset configurations are available:

  • Baggage — seats moved forward to maximize cargo space
  • Executive — seats moved back for maximum legroom in the first rear row
  • People & Baggage — balanced legroom and luggage space across both rear rows
  • Standard — all seats in the default position

Cargo volume in three-row configuration reaches up to 795 litres.

What Is the MBUX Rear Space Experience?

One of the VLE's most talked-about features is a retractable panoramic screen hidden in the headliner above the front seats. The screen is 31.3 inches, operates at 8K resolution, has a 32:9 split-screen ratio, and includes an integrated 8-megapixel camera for video calls. It can be activated by voice command — "Hey Mercedes, start the cinema experience" — at which point the screen extends, the power seats adjust, and the window shades close automatically.

Audio is handled by a Burmester 3D Surround Sound System with 22 loudspeakers and Dolby Atmos support. The infotainment system supports over 40 apps, including Disney+, video streaming, gaming, and Microsoft Teams video conferencing.

What Technology Powers the VLE?

The VLE runs on MB.OS, the Mercedes-Benz Operating System — the same platform being introduced across the brand's new electric lineup. It powers the driver assistance systems, infotainment, and over-the-air software updates. The fourth-generation MBUX system is integrated into MB.OS and runs AI agents from ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing, and Google Gemini simultaneously.

The MBUX Superscreen spans the full dashboard width with three displays: a 10.25-inch driver display, a 14-inch central touchscreen, and a 14-inch front passenger screen. An available head-up display projects a virtual 23.1-inch image that appears to float approximately 4 metres in front of the vehicle.

Driver assistance is handled through MB.DRIVE, which uses 10 cameras, five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. Functions include Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Lane Change Assist, and cooperative steering assistance on highways.

What Is the Ride Like?

The VLE uses a new AIRMATIC air suspension with 40 mm of ride-height adjustment and intelligent damping control. The suspension uses Google Maps data to begin adjusting damping ahead of known road imperfections, keeping the ride as smooth as possible for all three rows of passengers.

Rear-axle steering is also standard, with a seven-degree steering angle. This reduces the curb-to-curb turning circle to just 10.9 metres — comparable to the Mercedes-Benz CLA, despite the VLE's substantially larger footprint.
