What You Should Know About Winter Tires

What You Should Know About Winter Tires

Not that long ago, snow tires were just that: only good for driving in the snow.  They didn’t handle well and wouldn’t grip on dry and wet roads. If you made a single emergency stop on dry roads, you could ruin the tire’s tread.

Well, today’s snow tire technology is so much better.  When you’ve got high quality winter tires, you’re no longer at the mercy of the weather or other drivers around you.  They’re as effective as original equipment all season tires, but give you the gripping performance you need on snowy roads.

The rubber tread on today’s winter tires is designed to excel when the ambient temperature drops below 4 degrees Celsius.  With regular tires, as the thermometer falls, the rubber stops being pliable. On today’s new winter tires, the rubber is designed to remain supple even during very cold temperatures.

Winter tires are also a lot better in the snow than they once were.  It almost feels like you are driving on dry pavement. You get superb  control. One thing to remember: winter tires have to be replaced well before you’d retire conventional tires.

So are winter tires right for you?  If you deal with snow and ice for months at a time, winter tires are a worthwhile investment.
