The Symbolism Behind the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed Star

In 1890, Gottlieb Daimler founded the first incarnation of what Orangeville drivers know as Mercedes-Benz. Then called DMG (Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft), the company was soon taken over by Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek, but Gottlieb and his sons, Adolf and Paul Daimler, would stay involved for decades to come.

It was 1909 when the two brothers, Adolf and Paul, came up with the first design for the Mercedes-Benz logo. They had received a postcard from their father decades earlier that featured a picture of a map with the location of their hometown with a star around it. That same year, DMG acquired the rights to the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star and began emblazoning it on their vehicles.

Initially coloured blue, the Mercedes-Benz logo has undergone many evolutions, including the addition of a laurel border in 1926. It wasn’t until 1934 that the logo became silver. Regardless of these changes, the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning has always referred to the home of the brand’s founding family.

That said, according to Mercedes-Benz officials, the Mercedes-Benz logo has a double meaning—actually quadruple if you include its connection to Daimler family history. On the whole, the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star stands for universal motorization. Each point of the star represents a different medium for motoring: from land to sea to air, which the Daimler brothers believed DMG would conquer, as well. But what about the Mercedes-Benz AMG logo?

What About the Mercedes-Benz AMG Logo?

The Mercedes-Benz AMG logo looks more cryptic than the main Mercedes-Benz logo, but Halton Hills drivers will find that its meaning is more straightforward:

  • The Right Side: This side features an engraved cam, valve, and valve spring: crucial engine parts that point to the AMG division’s obsession with innovating in automotive high-performance technologies.
  • The Left Side: To the left, you’ll find an apple tree along a river which refers to the coat of arms for the town of Affalterbach, Germany where the Mercedes-Benz AMG headquarters is located.
