Identifying the Cause of Leaking Water

Is water leaking from under your car? If so, Orangeville drivers will need to determine which part of their car is leaking water. Here are the steps you’ll need to take to locate the source of the leak:

First, place a sheet under the leak. If the leak isn’t clear, it’s likely some other fluid than water. Once you’ve determined that the leak is water, move onto the next step.

If there’s a large puddle of water, it’s possible that a blown gasket is causing coolant from your radiator to be burned along with the fuel. If this is the issue, there will be large amounts of water and white smoke coming from your exhaust pipe.

You’ll want to inspect your coolant levels to make sure they haven’t fallen. If you notice that your coolant reservoir is low and there’s a large puddle of water under your car, get your vehicle to our service garage ASAP.

The other common culprit is a cracked windshield wiper fluid reservoir. If water freezes in this reservoir over the winter, it can cause the catch to crack and leak. What Fluid is Leaking from My Car?

If you find that the “water” leaking from under your car has a tint, and you’re worried it may not be water, here’s an index of the colours of every fluid in your vehicle’s systems:

Orange – Transmission Fluid or Radiator Coolant

Yellow – Radiator Coolant

Red – Transmission Fluid or Power Steering Fluid

Blue – Windshield Wiper Fluid

Pink – Power Steering Fluid or Transmission Fluid

Green – Antifreeze from Water Pump, Hoses, or Radiator

Light Brown – Newer Engine Oil or Gear Lubricant

Dark Brown – Brake Fluid or Older Engine Oil
