All-new electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class unveiled: The legend has evolved

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a groundbreaking addition to its iconic G-Class lineup with the introduction of the all-new electric G 580 with EQ Technology. This revolutionary model blends the timeless design and off-road prowess of the G-Class with cutting-edge electric technology, setting new standards for performance and capability in the electric vehicle (EV) market. If you have ever dreamed of daily driving a vehicle with the iconic design of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class around Brampton with the performance benefits of an elect

rified powertrain, the new G 580 with EQ Technology is exactly what you have been waiting for. Let's explore the innovative features and specifications that make the electric G-Class a game-changer.

A Legacy of Off-Road Excellence

For over 45 years, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been synonymous with rugged off-road performance and distinctive design. The new G 580 with EQ Technology continues this legacy, featuring a robust ladder frame design, independent front suspension, and a solid rear axle. The high-voltage lithium-ion battery, with a usable capacity of 116 kWh, is seamlessly integrated into the ladder frame, ensuring a low centre of gravity and enhanced stability.

Powerful and Efficient Electric Drive

The G 580 is powered by four individually controlled electric motors located near each wheel, delivering a combined output of 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque. This setup provides exceptional control and power, allowing the G 580 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. The electric motors are integrated into the ladder frame, with each motor driving its respective wheel via short axle shafts. This design not only enhances off-road capability but also ensures precise torque distribution through advanced torque vectoring.

G-Roar: A Unique Sound Experience

Mercedes-Benz has introduced the G-ROAR sound system to enhance the driving experience of the electric G-Class. Inspired by the distinctive sounds of the G-Class combustion engines, G-ROAR provides an impressive acoustic backdrop to the vehicle's acceleration. The system offers deep bass and sonorous tones, setting it apart from other electric vehicles. Drivers can customize the sound experience through the ELECTRIC DYNAMIC SELECT drive program, with options ranging from a restrained tone in "Comfort" mode to a powerful and emotional sound in "Sport" mode.

Impressive Range and Availability

The range of the new G 580 with EQ Technology has not been confirmed yet. However, early reports suggest we can expect around 400 kilometres of range. Details will be released at a later date.

Advanced Battery Technology

At the heart of the new electric G-Class is its state-of-the-art battery system. The high-voltage lithium-ion battery consists of twelve cell modules and is integrated into the ladder frame, ensuring a low centre of gravity and enhanced vehicle stability. The battery is protected by a torsion-resistant casing, safeguarding it from water and dirt intrusion during off-road adventures. Additionally, the electric G-Class supports both AC and DC charging, with the ability to charge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 32 minutes using a DC fast charger.

Advanced Off-Road Capabilities

Mercedes-Benz has equipped the electric G-Class with a suite of innovative off-road features. G-STEERING significantly reduces the turning circle when off-roading, while the intelligent off-road crawl function maintains optimal propulsion on challenging terrain. The vehicle also boasts impressive specs, such as the ability to climb a 100 percent grade, a fording depth of 850 millimetres, and high stability on lateral slopes of up to 35 degrees.

G-Class Crawl Mode for Off-Road Mastery

One of the standout features of the new electric G-Class is its innovative crawl mode. This intelligent off-road crawl function maintains optimal propulsion on challenging terrains, allowing the driver to focus on navigating difficult paths without worrying about throttle and brake inputs. The crawl mode offers three settings—slow, variable, and fast crawl—each designed to provide ideal speed and control based on the terrain. This feature ensures that the electric G-Class remains a formidable off-road vehicle, capable of tackling the toughest conditions with ease.

G-Turn: Maneuverability Redefined

Another groundbreaking feature of the new electric G-Class is the G-TURN function, which allows the vehicle to rotate on the spot. This capability is particularly useful for navigating tight spaces and avoiding obstacles on off-road trails. By independently controlling the torque at each wheel, the G-TURN function can rotate the vehicle up to two complete turns in either direction. This innovative feature underscores the electric G-Class's unparalleled maneuverability and adaptability in challenging environments.

Cutting-Edge Technology and Features

The electric G-Class is designed to offer a superior driving experience, both on and off the road. It comes standard with the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system, featuring a 12.3-inch driver display and a 12.3-inch central multimedia display with touch control. The vehicle also includes a redesigned off-road control centre, the new OFFROAD COCKPIT, and a "transparent hood" function that provides a virtual view under the front of the vehicle to help drivers navigate obstacles. Features like the Burmester® 3D Surround Sound System, KEYLESS-GO, and 64-color ambient lighting enhance comfort and convenience.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the G-Class. By combining the iconic design and off-road capability of the G-Class with state-of-the-art electric technology, Mercedes-Benz has created a vehicle that sets new benchmarks for performance, innovation, and sustainability in the automotive industry. Whether navigating city streets or tackling rugged terrain, the electric G-Class will arrive in the second half of 2024 and promises to offer an unparalleled driving experience that embodies the spirit of adventure and the promise of a greener future.
