How to Change the Battery in Your Mercedes-Benz Key Fob

Is your Mercedes-Benz key fob battery living on borrowed time? If so, you may be having trouble starting your car remotely, activating the horn, or locking and unlocking the doors. Fortunately, the problem can be easily fixed! Below, the service team at Mercedes-Benz Brampton has put together a handy guide, so you can learn how to change the battery in a Mercedes-Benz key quickly.

What Are the Signs the Battery Needs to Be Replaced?

If your Mercedes-Benz key fob battery isn’t long for this world, you’ll notice right away. Here are the warning signs it’s time to purchase a replacement:

  • Difficulty Starting Your Car: Starting the engine may take several attempts, or the key fob might not work at all.
  • Difficulty Locking/Unlocking Your Car: Locking or unlocking the car doors is a chore, as is using the panic alarm.
  • Dashboard Warning Signs: You may notice a warning sign on your dashboard that indicates a charging system problem, which can mean the key fob is losing battery power.

If you notice any of the above red flags, be proactive and change the battery/batteries in your Mercedes-Benz key fob as soon as possible. It takes just a few minutes and can save you unnecessary hassle.

How to Replace Your Mercedes-Benz Key Fob Battery

Follow these steps to change your Mercedes-Benz key fob battery quickly and easily:

  • Figure Out Your Key Type: You may need one or two batteries, depending on whether you have a Chrome SmartKey® or an older SmartKey®.
  • Purchase the Batteries: The newer Chrome SmartKey® takes one CR 2025 battery while the older SmartKey® requires two.
  • SmartKey® for Older Vehicles: To start, pull the latch at the end of the key holder. Then, push your key into the open slot horizontally. Finally, lift the battery out of its compartment.
  • Chrome SmartKey® for Newer Vehicles: Pull the tab at the bottom, and take off the cover. Do this by pushing the key into the small end of the slot. Finally, place the battery inside.
