The all-new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter: A new era of transport has dawned

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the latest addition to its electric fleet, the all-new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, aimed at redefining efficiency, range, and load capacity in the commercial van sector. This launch signifies a significant step forward in Mercedes-Benz's commitment to sustainable transport solutions, particularly for the North American and European markets.

A Closer Look at the eSprinter

The eSprinter is designed to cater to the needs of businesses seeking to green their operations without compromising on performance, capability, or utility. As the first Mercedes-Benz electric transport van to be offered in Canada, it delivers the unique combination of advanced technology, performance, efficiency, and commercial owners in Brampton have come to expect from the Sprinter, with the added benefits of electrification.

The vehicle's design and production leverage a new modular concept that enhances versatility and efficiency. It features a high-voltage front module, an underbody battery to maximize space, and a rear module housing an electrically driven axle. This modular approach not only facilitates various vehicle conversions but also promotes production synergies, highlighting Mercedes-Benz's investment in electric mobility.

Advanced Battery Technology and Efficient Charging Solutions

For the launch in Canada, the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter will be equipped with its largest battery option, offering a substantial usable capacity of 113 kilowatt-hours. This high-voltage battery utilizes lithium/iron phosphate (LFP) cell chemistry, a strategic choice that eliminates the need for cobalt and nickel, aligning with more sustainable manufacturing practices. Additionally, the inclusion of active thermal management maximizes the battery's efficiency and lifespan by maintaining optimal operating temperatures.

Charging Flexibility and Speed

Reflecting Mercedes-Benz's commitment to convenience and efficiency, the eSprinter supports charging via both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC), making it adaptable to a wide range of charging infrastructures. When charging via AC, such as through a home Wallbox, the onboard charger facilitates a maximum output of 9.6 kilowatts, efficiently converting AC to the DC required by the vehicle's battery.

For those needing a quicker boost, the eSprinter's DC fast-charging capability is especially noteworthy. It can accept charging speeds up to 115 kilowatts at compatible fast-charging stations, dramatically reducing downtime. Specifically, fast charging from 10% to 80% capacity can be accomplished in approximately 42 minutes for the 113-kWh battery option.

Range for Every Route

The eSprinter's electric range is designed to meet the demands of both daily operations and longer trips. Simulations based on the WLTP cycle estimate the range to be up to 400 kilometres under mixed driving conditions. When considering city-specific driving conditions, the range extends up to an impressive 500 kilometres as per WLTP city cycle simulations. These distances position the eSprinter as a highly viable option for a variety of business needs, from urban deliveries to intercity transport, ensuring reliability and performance across longer journeys without frequent stops for charging.

This range, combined with a load capacity of 14 cubic meters and a permissible gross vehicle weight of 4.25 tonnes, positions the eSprinter as a highly versatile option for longer journeys and substantial cargo needs.

The eSprinter's Electric Powertrain: Performance Unleashed

At the heart of the all-new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter's advanced electric drive system (eATS) are two groundbreaking components: a highly efficient motor and a cutting-edge electric rear axle. This dynamic duo represents a significant leap forward, marking their debut in the realm of battery-electric vans from Mercedes-Benz.

The core of the eSprinter's propulsion is its permanent magnet synchronous motor, a marvel of engineering that balances power with efficiency. Despite its modest weight of approximately 286 pounds, this motor stands out for its exceptionally high efficiency and superior thermal management capabilities. Such design considerations ensure that the motor operates optimally across a wide range of temperatures and driving conditions.

Power Variants to Suit Every Need

The eSprinter's motor is offered in two distinct power levels, providing versatility to meet diverse operational requirements. Customers can choose between a 100 kilowatt or a 150 kilowatt peak output variant, catering to different demands in terms of performance and range. Regardless of the selected power level, the motor boasts an impressive torque output of up to 295 pound-feet of torque, ensuring responsive and smooth acceleration from a standstill and ample power for highway driving and load carrying.

This combination of efficiency, power, and innovation underscores Mercedes-Benz's commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric mobility in the commercial vehicle sector. The eSprinter's electric powertrain not only sets new standards in terms of performance but also contributes to the brand's overarching goals of sustainability and reduced emissions, without compromising on reliability or the driving experience.

Technological Advancements

The latest Mercedes-Benz eSprinter sets a new benchmark in the realm of digitization and infotainment within the commercial vehicle sector. It is equipped with the state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) system, embracing the same advanced software generation that has already enriched the experience of Mercedes-Benz passenger car owners. This integration heralds a new era of connectivity and ease of use for eSprinter drivers.

Navigation Powered by Electric Intelligence

A standout feature of the MBUX system in the eSprinter is its navigation capability, enhanced with "Electric Intelligence." This innovative function takes the guesswork out of range and charging, providing drivers with real-time updates on their current range. These updates consider various factors such as traffic conditions and the route's topography, ensuring maximum accuracy and planning reliability. Moreover, the system intelligently calculates the most efficient charging strategy for reaching the destination promptly or achieving the desired State of Charge (SoC) upon arrival. This level of foresight and planning detail is instrumental in optimizing daily operations and long-distance journeys in the eSprinter.

Simplified Charging Process

The MBUX system streamlines the charging process, making it as straightforward as possible. Authentication at charging stations is conveniently managed through the MBUX interface, with payments processed seamlessly via Mercedes me connect services. This feature not only saves time but also enhances the overall user experience, making electric driving more accessible and enjoyable.

Enhanced Performance and Personalization

The new MBUX system in the eSprinter boasts improved performance and offers an array of personalization options, allowing drivers to tailor the system to their preferences and needs. From adjusting the interface to setting up individual profiles, the system accommodates the unique demands of commercial vehicle operations.

Optimized Voice Control

Further enriching the eSprinter's MBUX system is the optimized "Hey Mercedes" voice control assistant. This feature has undergone enhancements to understand and execute a wider range of commands more accurately, providing drivers with a hands-free option to control various vehicle functions and access important information without distraction.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter stands as a testament to the potential of electric transport. By combining sustainability with performance and technological innovation, it sets a new standard in the commercial van market, promising a greener, more efficient future for logistics and transportation.
