Top 5 Mercedes-Benz Engines

There are nearly countless reasons why someone may applaud Mercedes-Benz as being one of the top luxury brands in the world. However, one of the most significant contributors to Mercedes’ legendary reputation are undoubtedly their engines.

Here is a list detailing 5 of their most memorable engines so far:

  1. “Kompressor 55” AMG Supercharged 5.4-Liter SOHC 24 Valve V-8

The Kompressor 55 was a sheer monster. This is the same engine used in the SLR McLaren, which boasted of 617 horses under the hood.

  1. “M275 AMG” AMG Twin-Turbocharged 6.0-Liter SOHC 36 Valve V-12

This performance oriented engine is known for its broad application. You can find it any model from the S65 AMG to even the exclusive Maybach. It’s one of the most reliable engines under the Mercedes-Benz umbrella and, over the years, has evolved to produce more power than one can imagine, without giving away any of the reliability.

  1. Standard Issue 3.0 Liter 24 Valve Inline Six

This particular engine ushered Mercedes-Benz in to the “era of automotive practicality”. In fact, one could even say that it was involved in bringing the automotive industry out of the dark ages during the “80s.

The engine was recognized for its decent torque output and overall functioning, which was quite smooth.

  1. “32” Kompressor Supercharged 3.2 Liter 18 Valve V-6

These engines were known for their wide application. They were utilized in the normal sedans with moderate performance capabilities or could be tuned to do much more. Some AMG models with the “32” Kompressor were capable of touching speeds up to 155 mph.

  1. “73” and “70” AMG-Only 7.3 Liter and 7.0 Liter Normally Aspirated SOHC 36 Valve V-12

As the name indicates, these engines were obvious beasts. The 7.0 and the 7.3 were capable of delivering 496 horses and 525 horses, respectively.
